The Nigerian Sports Media Opportunity
Football is Nigeria's most followed sport. A well-optimised WordPress sports site targeting NPFL, EPL, and Champions League keywords can attract significant organic traffic from Nigerian football fans.
WordPress Theme Structure
Build a custom theme with child theme architecture. Use Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) for flexible match and player data, and a custom post type for match reports.
Sportmonks API Integration
Sportmonks offers comprehensive football data including live scores, fixtures, and standings. Fetch data via their REST API, cache responses in a transient for 60 seconds, and display via a custom Gutenberg block.
Performance Optimisation
News sites need fast load times for SEO. Use WP Rocket or LiteSpeed Cache, serve images via Cloudinary, and enable Gzip compression on your cPanel server.
