Nigerian E-Commerce Logistics: Building a Zone-Based Delivery Pricing System

How to model and implement Nigerian zone-based delivery pricing for e-commerce platforms — covering LGA mapping, flat-rate zones, and express delivery options.

The Nigerian Logistics Challenge

Nigeria has 36 states and 774 LGAs, each with different accessibility and logistics costs. A flat national shipping rate undercharges for remote areas and overcharges for Lagos same-day delivery.

Zone Model Design

Create delivery zones: Zone A (Lagos Island/Mainland same-day), Zone B (Lagos suburbs 1–2 days), Zone C (Abuja, PH, Ibadan 2–3 days), Zone D (other state capitals 3–5 days), Zone E (remote LGAs 5–7 days).

Database Schema

Model a DeliveryZone table with state/LGA arrays and base price. On checkout, match the user's shipping address to the appropriate zone and display the calculated delivery fee.

Express vs Standard

Offer a standard and express tier for Zone A and B. Express (same-day or next-day) attracts premium pricing and improves customer satisfaction for urgent orders.
