Paystack: The Nigerian-First Choice
Paystack (now a Stripe subsidiary) was built specifically for African payments. It supports Nigerian bank cards, USSD, bank transfer, and mobile money — covering payment methods that Nigerians actually use.
Paystack Fees
Paystack charges 1.5% + ₦100 per transaction (capped at ₦2,000). For subscriptions, it's a flat 1.5%. No monthly fees for the standard plan.
Stripe in Nigeria
Stripe is available in Nigeria but has limitations — it primarily supports international cards (Visa, Mastercard with 3D Secure). Local debit cards often fail. Use Stripe for international customers and Paystack for local Nigerians.
Recommended Architecture
Implement Paystack as the primary gateway with Stripe as a fallback for international customers. Use feature detection to show the appropriate payment option based on the user's card BIN or explicit selection.
