The Real Cost of IT Neglect in Nigerian Organisations

Nigerian organisations consistently underestimate the cost of IT neglect. The visible costs — downtime, data loss, breach incidents — are significant. The invisible costs — in lost productivity, missed opportunity, and strategic constraint — are larger.

The Visible Costs

The visible costs of IT neglect are well understood: system downtime, data loss events, security incidents. Nigerian organisations experience these with regularity, and the financial impact is measurable — in lost revenue during downtime, in recovery costs after incidents, in reputational damage after a breach.

These costs are significant. But they are not the largest cost of IT neglect. They are simply the most visible.

The Invisible Costs

The invisible costs are harder to quantify but ultimately larger. Staff productivity lost to unreliable systems — the hours per week that Nigerian office workers spend working around IT problems rather than doing productive work. Strategic opportunities that cannot be pursued because the organisation's technology environment cannot support them. Partnerships that don't happen because a prospective partner's due diligence reveals IT governance failures. Talent that doesn't join because technically capable candidates assess the technology environment and decline the offer.

These costs accumulate silently, over years, and are rarely attributed to IT neglect because the causal chain is indirect. But they are real, and they are large.

What Proactive IT Management Costs

Proactive IT management — regular infrastructure assessment, planned maintenance, vendor management, security monitoring — costs a fraction of reactive IT management. The ratio varies, but the principle is consistent: organisations that invest proactively in their IT environment spend less on IT overall than organisations that address problems only when they become crises.
